Durability detracts significantly from this great concept
I agree with the merits of this product mentioned by others. I researched a lot of similar products before deciding on Coughlan's and am very disappointed with their durability. I purchased these for my young daughters. Within a few hours of camping they both had lost the large piece of plastic cover over the side with the led light button. Although still functional, they look awful and the rest of the whistle will soon fall apart without this piece. They both had these connected to a laynard around their necks, and at most maybe bumped a log or tree while exploring the campground.
Of course, over 30 days had elapsed since I purchased these, presented them to the kids on our camping trip, and returned home. To be fair Amazon and Coghlan's didn't have the opportunity to address the situation, so we may have received a defective pair and they may have replaced them for us.
Update 7-21-11: Unfortunately within days the led light button, batteries, and light...
Poor quality
The part encasing the light falls off easily and the light flashes at the slightest touch, not when you actually intend to use this. The magnfying glass is pretty blurry. I will keep it, the whistle is good, but wouldn't recommend this product.
Pleasantly Surprised!
We just received ours today and were pleasantly surprised. We ordered 3 of them for our kids to use when camping. The whistle is a good quality, loud safety whistle. The compass is accurate even when moving around a lot. I actually didn't expect it to be this nice for such a low price. We're looking forward to using them in the woods!
